  Dried Pumpkin Seeds

After carving your pumpkin, separate the pulp from the seeds. Rinse(冲洗) the seeds and spread them out to dry. The next day, add enough melted butter or margarine(人造黄油) to coat each seed. Spread the seeds onto a cookie sheet(甜酥饼干) and bake for 20 minutes in a 300 degree oven for 20 minutes or until they are slightly brown.

  Caramel Apples

Take the paper wrapping off about 100 caramels(饴糖) and put them in a saucepan(炖锅). Put the saucepan over a pan of boiling water. Boil the water until the caramels melt. Put a wooden stick into the top of each apple, dip the apple into the caramel. Let them cool on wax paper and enjoy!

  Scary Stories

No Halloween party is complete without at least one scary story. Usually one person talks in a low voice while everyone else crowds together on the floor or around a fire. The following is a retelling of a tale told in Britain and in North Carolina and Virginia.

Pluckley residents are fed up of being invaded by hundreds of ghost-hunting revellers, causing vandalismand traffic chaos.

The village is said to have at least 12 spectres, including a highwayman, a phantommonk, the hanging body of a schoolmaster and a poltergeistin the local pub.

In previous years residents of the sedate Kent hamlet have tried to turn the night of expected disturbance into family fun, set up by the parish council's own Halloween committee.

But although the festivities raised thousands of pounds for good causes the uproar caused by hundreds of revellers flocking to the village has alarmed locals.

Now Halloween has been banned and the parish council has called in police to keep visitors under control.

"There will be no entertainment provided for visitors," said a notice on the Parish Council website.

"There will be no barbecue, no hog roast, no beer tent, no fun fairand there will be no ghost tours. In fact, unless you are coming for a quiet drink, may we suggest you visit one of the many other attractions in Kent for Halloween."

Parish council clerk Jackie Grebby said previous organised events had caused problems.

"When we've tried to lay onsomething before it has backfired. The whole village has been gridlocked," she said.

"There is in fact very little to do in Pluckley apart from have a quiet drink. People are very welcome if they just want to come for a quiet drink."

Residents have been advised to keep their gates locked and any outside lights turned on until at least 2am in the morning to deter troublemakers.

Halloween is a bad time of year for black cats, with their long-standing connections with witches, hubble-bubbleand evil.

Reports of deliberate cruelty to black cats rise especially in the weeks around Halloween in Britain, the RSPCA animal charity said on Wednesday.

But it seems that not only do people treat black cats badly in October -- they shunthem for the rest of the year too.

Black cats at animal shelters take longer than others to find homes, probably because of all the superstitions surrounding them, the charity said.

"Unfortunately, black cats often do spend longer in our rehoming centres than others as they are frequently overlooked by potential owners," said shelter manager Beverly Leavy.

"But their fur color makes no difference to how much love they have to give," she added. "The cats are ready to make wonderful pets."

The image problem varies from country to country and often involves black cats crossing people's paths.

Historians differ about the origins of the superstitions.

Some point to the ancient Celts, some to folkloretales that liken cats to snakes and cast them as the constant companions of witches, others to a Medieval belief that they caused the black plaguein Europe.

The view that they bring bad luck has also woven its way into art and popular culture.

American writer of macabretales, Edgar Alan Poe, published a short story "The Black Cat" in 1843 and in the late 19th century a shady cabaretcalled Le Chat Noir welcomed guests in the Bohemian Montmartre district of Paris.

The RSPCA is appealing for potential owners to come forward for the black cats in its shelters.
